EXHIBITION 2012
2. February 2012 - 25. November 2012
MERETE BARKER VIERA COLLARO
Margrete Sørensen
Cisternerne (the cisterns) below the park of Søndermarken is the site for a meeting between the artists Merete Barker, Viera Collaro and Margrete Sørensen. Here they have created art in dialogue with the venue itself. In the gigantic underground columned hall that used to accommodate a reservoir, which supplied the city of Copenhagen with water. The three artists have each installed one large work of art, that relates to the specific space and in itself creates space.
Barker, Collaro and Sørensen were all members of the artist group Ny Abstraktion (New Abstraction), which in the 1980s worked on integrating art into the exhibition space in large rooms, for example, at the Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall and the National Gallery (Statens Museum for Kunst). The group created spectacular exhibitions that reverberated throughout the art world.
The current exhibition in Cisternerne takes as its starting point the three artists' long-time work with physically sensuous and metaphysical spatial dimensions. In their own part of the subterranean surroundings they have each created specific places. Together they form an area of tension between light and dark, material and immaterial, physical and metaphysical, between spaces that you can sense and magical spaces, which are outside our normal realm of experience.
